Antigua is a major travel hub of the Eastern Caribbean, and has a relatively high population density, but still contains some nice areas. Antigua boasts many small coves with beaches, numerous colonial-era ruins, and a mountainous interior with the potential for jungle hikes. Snorkeling and scuba diving are options around the island. Kite boarding, windsurfing, and sailing are popular activities.


Falmouth and English Harbours on Antigua

Colonial-era ruins

Antigua contains many ruins of the colonial era, particularly sugar mills that are scattered about the island, as well as impressive fortresses that are concentrated in the south. Nelson’s Dockyard, in the Falmouth and English Harbour region, is the most famous attraction, although other military ruins, such as Fort Berkeley and Shirley Heights, deserve a visit. One of the best is Great Fort George, high above Falmouth. A 4-wheel drive vehicle with good clearance is necessary to drive all the way to the top (or you can simply walk), and the views are incomparable.
