Abacos, Bahamas

Barrier Reef

A
barrier reef system runs along the northeastern side of the Abacos, allowing for great snorkeling and scuba diving. The water here is cooler than in most of the rest of the Bahamas.

Marsh Harbour

Marsh Harbour is the main hub of the Abacos, containing restaurants, banks, shops, etc. It is the center of sailing activity in the region, and has sort of a Florida Keys feel to it. There are numerous guest houses located a few miles out of town that represent better value and much better scenery and staying in Marsh Harbour.

Interior

The interior of
Great Abaco, like that of Andros, is forested with monocultures of Caribbean Pine and was all logged decades ago. The understory is foreboding. There are a few Blue Holes that make wonderful swimming spots. Abaco National Park on the south end of Great Abaco is difficult to explore by car because of a lack of paved roads.
