Belize (islands and reefs)
The Atolls
The atolls of Belize--Turneffe Island Atoll, Lighthouse Reef Atoll, and Glover's Reef Atoll--are beyond the barrier reef and offer some of the best snorkeling and scuba diving anywhere on the planet. Visibilities are high, and the water is warm. Lighthouse Reef Atoll contains a deep Blue Hole made famous by Cousteau, and Half Moon Caye Natural Monument, where one may find the rare white red-footed booby.

Camping on Glover's Atoll Resort

Glover's Reef Atoll
Glover's Reef Atoll is the most remote, and has the least emergent land area of the three, with just a few small islets, or cayes, breaking the surface of the Caribbean. On the 5 hectare Northeast Caye is Glover's Atoll Resort. Don't let the "resort" title fool you. Accommodations consist of open-air thatch cabins or you can bring your own tent. This is one of the best values in the Caribbean, for those who don't mind primitive living. A small sailboat (right) runs weekly from Sittee River, Belize, and is included in the price. Snorkeling and scuba diving are possible from the beach in just about any direction from the cay, and practically any water depth can be found. Boat transport is available to dive other areas of the atoll.
