Costa Rica Whitewater

Pacific Coast

On the other side of the country, somewhat more mellow whitewater awaits. The Naranjo and Savegre Rivers drain the area to the south of Manuel Antonio. Run less frequently than the highlands counterparts, these rivers also offer several sections of varying degrees of length and difficulty. The higher up you go, the more difficult (both the whitewater and access). It is possible to run both these rivers all the way to the ocean, although the lower sections are fairly flat (and full of crocodiles!). Manuel Antonio National Park offers excellent beaches for relaxing, and jungle trails for hiking, and it is possible to kayak surf the waves in the ocean. Quepos makes a good base for exploring this part of the country.

Other rivers

Many other white-water rivers can be found in Costa Rica, many of which have little in the way of commercial guiding operations, and represent excellent opportunities for adventure for those skilled in whitewater boating and rescue. A number of these rivers are described in the books on the books page.
