Moorea
Opunohu Valley
The Opunohu Valley supported a large pre-contact population. Many ancient Polynesian ruins exist here. Some marae (temples) have been restored, and the remains of other, unrestored structures can be found in the surrounding jungle. The restored marae are along the road to Belvedere Lookout, which provides an incredible view of Mt. Rotui flanked by Cook’s Bay and Opunohu Bay.

Hiking and trekking
Moorea contains many interior trails, although most are not well marked and a local guide is recommended. The topography is steep and the jungle is dense. Mt. Rotui, the second highest peak, can be climbed in a day (bring plenty of water), although the trail is difficult to find from the bottom. Mt. Tohivea, the highest peak, is more remote and usually requires an overnight trip (and a guide).
