Roatan
Roatan is one of the three Bay Islands (Las Islas de la Bahia) in the Caribbean Sea off the coast of Honduras. Of the three main islands—Utila, Roatan, and Guanaja—Roatan is the largest. Roatan is one of the least expensive scuba diving destinations in the world. A coral reef circles Roatan, providing a great diversity of dive sites. Snorkeling and swimming are also good, and sandy beaches provide beauty and relaxation.

Roatan is a destination for both experienced scuba divers and beginners. In fact, many divers begin here, obtaining their open water dive certification with a course from a local dive master. The warm water, good visibility, and relatively cheap prices present an excellent opportunity for beginning or advanced training. Many dive shops exist in West End, and their types of certifications and policies vary, so do some research beforehand, shop around, and talk to some of the dive masters before deciding on a course.

The extensive coral reef that encircles Roatan has led to a plethora of named dive sites. The ‘best’ sites will vary based on currents, wind conditions, and how long of a boat ride you want. During the rainy season, visibility does decline due to runoff from Roatan.
