Roatan
Snorkeling
The best snorkeling in Roatan is at West Bay (not to be confused with West End). The reef here is very close to a beautiful sandy beach. Cruise ships may disgorge their passengers in droves at West Bay Beach, so it is worth finding out their schedule and avoiding West Bay on those days. Be advised that petty thieves are in the vegetation watching you, so do not leave any unattended valuables on this beach!! The best way to get there is via water taxi.

West End
West End (not to be confused with West Bay) contains the densest concentrations of dive shops and accommodations on Roatan. Although congested by island standards, it still retains a certain charm. The roads are rutted, sandy affairs, and there are no luxury resorts—yet. Many of the locals retain a quirky charm (e.g., Rudy, of Rudy’s restaurant). Scooters can be easily rented and are the best way of getting around and exploring nearby. Many of the newer, nicer accommodations are on the north side of West End.
