Southeastern Whitewater

Advanced rivers

True thrill seekers can find challenges on a number of rivers in the Southeast, including Section IV of the Chattooga, the Cheoah, and the Tallulah Gorge. Many of these rivers either run only after a heavy rain, or during scheduled dam releases, which may be very infrequent. It is possible to arrange a raft trip with an outfitter for some of these rivers. Private trips should only be undertaken by expert paddlers.

Learning the sport

White-water boating is a group activity, due to logistics and for the sake of safety. Seeking out local paddling clubs is a great way to meet like-minded people and learn more about the sport. American Whitewater (www.americanwhitewater.org) provides information on local clubs, as well as descriptions of rivers and difficulty ratings.
