Wrangell - St. Elias National Park and Preserve

McCarthy and Kennicott

McCarthy is a small settlement that makes a great central jumping off point to explore the park. Reduced to just a handful of hardy Alaskans in the winter, McCarthy comes alive in the spring. A few “hotels” (very quaint) and eateries are present. The old Kennicott Mine historical area is 5 miles up the road. This road is inaccessible by private vehicle, but a shuttle bus is available in summer (it is not an unpleasant walk, but watch out for the mosquitoes!).

Wildlife

Dall sheep, mountain goats, caribou, moose, and brown and black bears may be seen, among others. Don’t expect large herds or close encounters. Much of the park is tundra, or covered by snow or ice, and often sightings of large wild animals are at a distance. Spend some time in the backcountry, be observant, and you will be rewarded.
